3) Vacation in Corolla

If you want to pack a lot of punch into your next vacation, consider one of the most unique travel experiences on the eastern seaboard. Corolla, North Carolina for those in the “Know” is a favorite vacation spot for residents of North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Maryland. Located on a narrow inlet and bordered on the west by Currituck Sound and on the east by the immense shores of the Atlantic Ocean, Corolla, North Carolina offers a multitude of activities, lodging, and dining experiences on the eastern seaboard. The nearby Corolla Light Resort (where this house is located) was voted the North Carolina's Resort of the Year for almost every year in the past decade and offers visitors a delightful playground environment for both adults and children. Equipped with swimming pools, racquetball courts, tennis courts, game rooms and outdoor activities such as Jeep Tours, horseback riding, and some of the most pristine beaches in the country.

Most people have heard of the Wild Horses of Corolla but don’t know how they got there. They are the decedents of horses that were ship wrecked off the coast of the Outer Banks, driven on the reefs by pirates in the 16th and 17th century. The ships looted, the sailors killed, the horses swam to shore to fend for themselves. Their decedents still roam and can be seen running in the ocean and raising their young. The ghosts of the pirates are said to be seen riding on their backs with lanterns raised to encourage ships to ground.

Visitors to Corolla spend their days soaking up the rays, sinking toes into white beach sand and visiting historic locations such as Nag's Head, Kitty Hawk, and the Currituck Beach lighthouse. The Currituck Beach lighthouse belongs to historic Corolla and is considered a Heritage Park. The 162-foot lighthouse continues to be one of the most popular landmarks and visitor spots around Corolla and remains today much as it was when it was built of bricks in 1875. The lighthouse is a working lighthouse and visitors to the island are able to see its beacon flashing every 20 seconds from miles away.

Corolla and the surrounding Outer Banks of North Carolina provide a wide range of activities such as deep sea fishing, hiking, horseback riding, kayak tours, championship golf courses, surfing lessons or the ultimate in relaxation for visitors. For those who wish to shop, Corolla offers upscale shopping, dining and all of the modern conveniences of modern life while still offering the seclusion of an upscale waterfront resort.

Corolla was one of North Carolina's best-kept secrets until the mid-1980s, and served as a popular beach resort and destination for generations of North Carolinians. Corolla may be accessed from Virginia from Virginia Beach to the north, or from a land bridge at the base of Currituck Sound toward Southern Shores and Kitty Hawk. Because of its location on the narrow stretch of sand between the Atlantic Ocean and Currituck Sound, Corolla Light Resort, as well as many of the amenities within Corolla, offer visitors with a wide range of choices and opportunities to explore and enjoy this still relatively secluded getaway.
